Welcome Monique Smalls!

Following an extensive search and interview process, we are excited to announce Monique Smalls as the Principal of Kelly Edwards Elementary School for the 2021-2022 school year. Mrs. Smalls brings an abundance of knowledge to the field of education, and we could not be more excited to have her as part of the leadership team within our district. Ms. Smalls has worked as an elementary teacher in first through third grades, Reading Recovery Specialist, Reading and Literacy Coach, and Assistant Principal. She has earned an undergraduate degree in the area of early childhood education from the University of South Carolina-Aiken; a Master’s degree in the area of Curriculum and Instruction from University of Phoenix, and a Specialist degree in the area of Educational Administration and Leadership from Arkansas State University.

“Throughout this process, we were looking for a leader who is highly effective at improving teaching and learning and focused on the growth of scholars and staff.  We also value a leader who easily connects with parents, scholars, and staff, and someone who is a keen listener and problem-solver. Throughout the interview process, Ms. Smalls demonstrated energy and passion to help KEES continue its pursuit of excellence.”

Ms. Smalls is the mother of two active teenage boys, Malachi and Isaiah. When band and sports are not keeping her and her family busy, they are relaxing and enjoying each other’s company. Her favorite quote of all times by John C. Maxwell is, “Students don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” She believes bringing this belief into her daily walk through the hallways will continue to keep Kelly Edwards’ motto Love First, Teach Second alive and well within the hallways and classrooms.

Nakeisha Baxley, current Principal of Kelly Edwards Elementary School has accepted a position as Federal and State Programs Coordinator at the district office and will begin her position July 1, 2021.
